The BizUp Fund is a venture capital fund for youth that provides seed capital to youth-led startups, early-stage and emerging growth businesses. The Fund capitalizes on the ever growing number of youth in the economy and entrepreneurship being the solution to getting them engaged in Sustainable Economic Enterprises.

In addition to the Capital, Junior Achievement Kenya will continuously connect beneficiaries access to mentors (mobile based, web based and one-on-one sessions) to support business growth with sustainability in mind.

Who can benefit?

The Fund was established to support Kenyan youth-led businesses that meet below criteria:

  1. Individual or group business run by Kenyan youth between the age of 18 and 24 years
  2. Be a Junior Achievement Kenya Alumni or Complete the Company Program Training for Junior Achievement Kenya to be equipped with entrepreneurship and financial literacy skills
  3. Evidence of on-going business for at least 1 year (in the absence of number 2 above)
  4. Registered members through the BizUp App or online account

What you need to know?

The BizUp Fund is structured as repayable instruments disbursed to high growth youth-led businesses. The Fund will make investments of between KES 20,000 and KES 250,000 in these businesses with a time horizon of up to 36 months.

The Funds will be made available to applicants that meet our investment criteria:

  • Value Proposition – Clearly articulates why customers will pay the designated price for the product or service. Who are the players in the space/industry and what is the competitive advantage

  • Market Feasibility – Clearly articulates a sustainable market for the product or service (e.g., existing market demand, competition, future market projections)

  • Financial Feasibility – Clearly articulates why the venture is financially viable (e.g., short- and long-term finances, probable revenues and costs, potential for grants). What are the opportunities for growth and how to build it to a sustainable business

  • Ability To Execute – Clearly articulates that the management team has the proper skills and experience to execute the venture's strategy, achieve product development, production and sales targets. What is the likelihood that the venture will be launched within the time presented or achieve growth levels presented. What are some of the risks facing the business

  • Potential Impact – Given successful launch, what is the likelihood of significant economic impact over the long-term? How can you ensure the business is sustainable and serves a need in the society
